Impunity: Alleged execution and mutilation case in West Papua filed to Komnas HAM

The Legal Aid Agency Talenta Keadilan Papua (LBH TKP) has filed a complaint regarding the killing and mutilation of Mrs Tarina Murib in the Yugumuak District, Puncak Regency, on 3 March 2023 to the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM). Security force members allegedly injured at least eight other civilians during the raid (see photo, source: independent HRDs) against the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB). LBH TKP has also reported the shooting of a teacher. The violent incidents led to the internal displacement of indigenous villagers from the districts Yugumuak and Mageabume and heavy restrictions on civilian activities in the conflict-affected area.

LBH TKP urges Komnas HAM to conduct a preliminary investigation to assess the situation and gather accurate data. They call for legal action against the individuals responsible for the reported violence against residents. The need for a comprehensive investigation into the shooting and mutilation of Mrs Tarina Murib had already been demanded by Amnesty International Indonesia (AII) in early March 2023. AII called upon the security forces to follow procedures ensuring accountability and protecting the rights of civilians.
