Police officer beats street vendor in Timika

On 13 April 2022, Brigadier AK, a police member of the Mimika District Police, attacked a street vendor, Mr Taman, as he was selling food in front of the SMAN 1 Timika high school. The police officer approached the vendor and prompted him to give the food to him for free. As Mr Taman gave a bag with the requested food to him, officer AK punched him twice in the face. Mr Taman sustained bruises around the right eye and a cut on the lips (see photos below) as a result of the torture. The incident was recorded on camera and later went viral on social media.

Members of a solidarity group reported the case to the Profession and Security Division (Propam). Brigadier AK was temporarily detained (see photo below) and held accountable in a code of conduct hearing. Neither the outcome of the hearing nor the sanction against Brigadier AK was shared with the public. According to the police, AK was intoxicated as he attacked the street vendor.
