The Telenta Keadilan Papua Legal Aid Institute (LBH TKP) has documented a case involving the alleged rape of Mrs L. by an Indonesian soldier in Nabire Regency, Papua Tengah Province. The alleged rape occurred on 11 May 2023, at 02:00 am on Jayanti Kali Bobo Street in Nabire District, Nabire Regency. LBH TKP provides legal aid to the victim’s family, who seek the maximum punishment for the perpetrator.
The victim underwent a medical examination (visum) and is supported by the Nabire Regency Office of Empowerment and Child Protection. LBH TKP urged the relevant authorities, particularly the military, to promptly investigate the alleged perpetrator and ensure he is held accountable if proven guilty.
Captain Siswanto, Commander of Sub-Detachment XVII/1-1 of the Military Police in Nabire, claimed that the Kodim 1705 Nabire military command had launched a preliminary investigation against Sergeant DM, a member of the Military District Command (Koramil) Kwatisore. The military police are investigating allegations of sexual violence by Sergeant DM, as regulated under Article 351 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), on assault and other relevant articles related to sexual offences. Siswanto mentioned that Sergeant DM has not been detained as the case is still categorised as “a minor assault.”
