Update law enforcement process – 18 military personnel suspected of collectively torturing six Papuans

A team of the Papuan representative office of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM Papua) went to the Edera District, Mappi Regency, on 16 and 17 September 2022 to investigate allegations regarding the torture of two indigenous Papuans on 30 August 2022. One of the victims died as a result of the torture. Komnas HAM revealed that the military personnel had tortured four more victims prior to the incident on 28 August 2022. The four victims were identified as Mr Amsal Pius Yimsimen, Mr Korbanius Yamin, Mr Lodefius Tikamtahae and Mr Saferius Yame.

During his visit, Komnas HAM Papua members interviewed ten Raider 600/Modang infantry battalion personnel alleged to be involved in the torture. However, the interview did not lead to further insights because all suspects refused to testify. However, Ramandey declared that Komnas HAM would interview the suspected military personnel again once the military police have finalised its investigations.

As of the end of October 2022, the military police have identified eighteen suspects. All are members of the Raider 600/Modang infantry battalion. They are alleged to be involved in the torture of the six indigenous Papuans. Military police representatives declared that the case files would be submitted to the military prosecutor in early October 2022.
