Police work questioned in bombing case targeting Victor Mambor

The case of Papuan journalist Mr Victor Mambor, who was the victim of a bomb attack in early 2023, continues to be a source of controversy and concern. Despite multiple attempts to seek justice, the perpetrators of the attack remain at large.

The investigation into the incident has been plagued by delays and setbacks. In July 2024, the Jayapura District Court rejected a pretrial application filed by Mr Mambor’s legal representatives, citing a lack of evidence to identify the perpetrators. This decision has sparked outrage among human rights activists and journalists, who argue that the police have not conducted a thorough investigation. Mr Gustaf Kawer, Director of the Papua Human Rights Advocates Association (PAHAM Papua), has been vocal in criticising the authorities for the handling of the case. He accused the police of “trivialising” the incident and failing to take it seriously.

The case has also highlighted the ongoing threats faced by journalists in Papua. Mambor’s attack is just one example of the violence and intimidation that journalists in the region often endure. Human rights organisations have expressed deep concern about the safety of journalists and human rights defenders in West Papua and have called for greater protection.

The ongoing delays and setbacks have raised questions about the commitment of the authorities to bringing the perpetrators to justice. The case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by journalists and human rights activists in West Papua, and the urgent need for greater protection and accountability.
