Soldiers allegedly tortured five Papuan students in Mosso Village, Jayapura city

Seven members of the military border security unit Yonif 711/RKS/Kampung Mosso tortured five Papuan students in the village of Mosso, Muara Tami District, on 6 May 2022. Mr Avelinus Korey, Mr Jekson Ibe, Mr Simon Orambe, Mr Ronal Wey and Mr Herson Habiweno went fishing in the Mosso village. The soldiers reportedly intercepted the students on their way home after fishing and subsequently tortured them inside the military post in Mosso.

The five students aforehand informed the military members that they were going fishing in the Mosso village near the border with Papua New Guinea. Around 5.30 pm, the friends left the fishing site in the direction of Jayapura. They arrived at the military post in Mosso around 7.30 pm. Mr Avelinus Korey waited on his motorcycle, while his friends entered the post to inform the military members about their departure from the fishing site. Subsequently, a military member told Mr Korey to enter the post as well.

According to the five Papuan students, seven military members tortured them inside the military post. They slapped, punched and kicked the students, allegedly for passing by other military posts in the area without reporting their fishing activities. They punched and slapped Mr Avelinus Korey repeatedly to the face, causing bruises below the right and left eye and swellings on both temples (see photo on top, source: Jubi). The soldiers slapped the other students repeatedly in the face and kicked them to the body. Thereupon, the perpetrators told the students to leave and go home and treat their wounds.

The five students reported the case to the Papuan Legal Aid Institute (LBH Papua), which will file a complaint to the military police in Jayapura. Representatives of the XVII/Cenderawasih military command have not commented on the allegations of torture, yet.
