Seven students arbitrarily arrested in Jayapura after participating in peaceful demonstration

On 10 November 2022 students gathered at the campus of the Jayapura University of Science and Technology (USTJ) to commemorate the 21st anniversary of Theys Eluay’s death. Based on information from credible sources according to Amnesty International, an hour later, police broke into the campus premises using a patrol car.

They then forcibly dispersed the student gathering and took the raised morning star flag. USTJ students who did not accept the arrival of the police then closed the entrance to the campus. In response, authorities allegedly broke down campus doors and fired tear gas at students.

They later arrested seven students involved in peaceful protests and allegedly beat them. The seven students detained were taken to the Jayapura Police Station.
