Another case of state violence unfolded in the Kolomdol District, Pegunungan Bintang Regency, Papua Pegunungan Province. Police officer Mr Roi Kopong, 38, reportedly ill-treated his wife, Mrs Jein Urpon, 28, on 5 March 2024, around 10:00 pm. Mrs Urpon later died as a result of the injuries she sustained. Mr Kopong was allegedly intoxicated during the incident. According to information received, Mr Kopong viciously attacked his wife with a wooden beam and a machete. Mrs Urpon suffered extensive bruises all over her body and a severe head wound as a result of the assault (see photos below).
Following the attack, witnesses to the incident fled the scene and reported the incident to a nearby security post. Mrs Urpon reportedly succumbed to her injuries on the way to the general hospital in the town of Oksibil. Chief of the Pegunungan Bintang District Police, Commissioner Muhammad Dafi Bastomi, affirmed that the case had been promptly taken up by the Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim). Dafi elaborated that the suspect had been taken into custody for legal processing. Police officers seized evidence, including a machete and four logs.
