A police officer and his son were caught on surveillance camera torturing J&T employees in the town of Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, on 8 December 2022. The officer’s son, a man with the initials JRW, beat at least four employees inside the J&T Express Office in Wamena. The officer, named after the initials YW, also punched one of the employees who defended himself against the attack and intimidated them with death threats. The J&T employees reported the incident to the Profession and Security Division (Propam).
The incident was reportedly triggered because JRW was angry that he had to come to the J&T office to pick up a shipment that could not be delivered to his house. According to the victims, JRW slapped the employee, Mr Kristian Vanhelen Tansil, twice on the cheek. Mr Tansil defended himself and punched back. Thereupon, JRW called officer YW and asked him to come to the J&T office.
As officer YW arrived at the J&T office, the situation escalated. JRW attacked at least four employees, including Mrs Narsyani, a female employee. JRW punched her in the face causing a bruise on the right eye (see photo below, source: independent HRDs). In the package storage room, officer YW beat one of the employees who defended himself against JRW’s attack. He sustained a bleeding nose and bruises on the face due to the attack. The victims reported the attack to the Propam division of the Papuan Regional Police (Polda Papua). According to the head of the Propam Polda Papua division, Commissioner Gustav Urbinas, YW was taken into custody and is being investigated concerning the incident. The police will initiate an ethics code process against YW if the investigation proves
