Military members in Nduga torture teacher to death

Members of the Quari Atas Yonif R 431/SSP military post in the Kenyam District, Nduga Regency allegedly tortured a 40-year-old high school teacher, Mr Musa Nawipa, on 27 April 2022. Mr Nawipa was arrested shortly after resistance fighters of the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) attacked the military post. According to information received from local sources, the military personnel tortured Mr Nawipa inside the military post for one day until he succumbed to the injuries which he sustained as a result of the torture. A photo (see photo below), which appears to be taken during or shortly after the torture shows bruises on his upper body and face

On 28 April 2022, the body was flown to Wamena for burial (see photo below). The incident hardly caused the attention of the public in West Papua, as it was not covered by the local media. The military police (PM), the legal institution in Indonesia responsible for investigating allegations of criminal offences committed by military personnel, did not initiate a criminal investigation into the case.
