Sergeant First Class Marius Bernadus Mabur (SFC MM), a member of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU), has been accused of burning his wife, Elis Agustina Yotha, alive, resulting in her death.
The incident, which occurred at their residence near Silas Papare Air Force Base in Sentani, Jayapura Regency, stemmed from a dispute over a mobile phone charger on 1 December 2024. According to the victim’s family, what began as a minor disagreement escalated dramatically when Mabur allegedly threatened his wife with a hammer before dousing her with kerosene and setting her alight while she was fully clothed.
“While on fire, Elis ran to the back of the house to save herself and was rescued by neighbours,” stated her brother, Daud Zamuel Yotha. She was immediately taken to Yowari Regional General Hospital in Jayapura Regency, where she fought for her life for two weeks before succumbing to her severe burns on 15 December 2024 at 16:57 local time.
Air Commander Mokh Mukhson, the Commander of Silas Papare Air Base, confirmed the incident, stating that the accused has been detained by the Air Force Military Police (Satpomau). The base authorities are also assisting with the deceased’s funeral arrangements.
The victim’s family, represented by Daud, has demanded a thorough investigation and appropriate punishment for the perpetrator. The case has drawn serious attention from all parties, particularly given that the accused is an Air Force member tasked with maintaining security and protecting the public.
The Silas Papare Air Base authorities have confirmed they are taking strict action against the perpetrator and had been providing assistance to the victim during her medical treatment before her death.
